- Tell us about your business and what personal/professional moments in your life led you to starting your own company?
My company, Sensational Soirees, provides wedding and event planning, design/styling and stationery services. We service Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and also love to travel. I wholeheartedly believe in celebrating all of life’s special moments and events. Therefore, I take great pride in helping my clients plan with ease and celebrate in style! It was destiny for me to pursue a career in the events industry; in fact my very first job, at age 16, was working at a special events venue. After graduating college, I went on to work at the same special events venue and even had my wedding reception there a few years later. Creativity and passion fueled me, and after industry research and training, I went on to start Sensational Soirees in 2012. It was truly one of the best decisions I have ever made!
- What doubts did you have to fight through to keep going and what steps did you take to overcome them?
Sometimes when you first start a business, it is hard to get your name out there and reach your target audience. During that time it can be a little discouraging, but it is so important to encourage yourself and have a circle of support. There is a scripture I love that kept me motivated, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin..” (Zechariah 4:10). It is also important to stay committed to education and networking, so that you continue to grow and connect with like-minded entrepreneurs. As I look back on the past 3 years of business, I’m so proud of all I have accomplished, and I have so much optimism for the next 3 years.
- Tell us about a time where you made a big investment in yourself or in your business and how it paid off?
It is so important to have a website, so that was probably one of the best investments I made for the business. My website also has a blog page, so blogging has allowed me to reach a much larger audience and create a platform to share advice and inspiration with others. I recently had my website redesigned and the feedback I’ve received already is so amazing! The new look and feel better reflects the Sensational Soirees brand and our commitment to beauty and details. The redesign was totally worth the investment!
- What personal mantra or quote has been a big part of keeping you going in your business?
I live by the mantra live, laugh, love! This mantra has also been an important part of my business, and helped me keep my focus on what matters most…my commitment to creating an enjoyable experience for my clients, while doing what I love. In business, it’s so important to remain true to you or else you won’t be fulfilled and happy. My way of working with clients is always keeping it professional, but also having a good time!
- What is one tip you would want to give other entrepreneurs in creative businesses?
The one tip I would give to other entrepreneurs is to maintain balance. As an entrepreneur, wife, mom and more, I’m proud of my ability to balance it “all”. Now, everyday is not perfect, but prioritizing has helped me so much. I’m committed to creating quality events, and not necessarily the quantity of events in a calendar year. This type of prioritizing helps me to give my best to my clients, my family and myself.
- What are you most proud of right now in your professional life?
I’m most proud that Sensational Soirees is still here and thriving! I’ve seen businesses start and then fade away, but I’m thankful that I’ve stuck with my passion and continue to invest in our growth and our clients. I have 2 little ones at home watching me, and I hope that they learn from my example never to give up on their dreams.
